2012 Olympia Preview

Competitors, Venue, Hype & More

This September 27th - 30th the best bodybuilders in the world will once again come to Las Vegas to see who will edge out the competition at the 2012 Olympia contest. Events will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Orleans Arena and the Orleans Hotel.

A new set of qualifications apply to this year's Olympia and only those who fall into at least one of the following categories will be competing this year:

1. Those who placed in the top four in each division at the previous year's Olympia
2. Those who placed in the top three in each division at the Arnold Classic/International
3. The top two in each division at the New York Pro
4. Those who earned first place at all other competitions

According to the new standards, six competitors from the United States qualify for the Olympia 2012 contest: Phil Heath, Jay Cutler, Kai Greene, Dexter Jackson, Branch Warren and Evan Centopani. Joining them in the competition will be Victor Martinez of the Dominican Republic, Ronny Rockel and Dennis Wolf from Germany, Lionel Beyeke of France and Michael Kefalianos from Australia.

Four-time Mr. Olympia champion Jay Cutler will be looking to reclaim his title to become Mr. Olympia 2012. If he does, it will be his fifth Mr. Olympia win. In 2011, as reigning champion, he lost the title to his training partner and friend, Phil Heath. While some speculated that his bodybuilding career was over last year, Cutler has promised to return in better-than-ever shape.

He'll have to face several challenges to do it. Cutler will be 39 near the time of the Olympia 2012 competition and he's contending with a torn bicep. This year's competition will show whether or not he can bounce back from a setback as he has in the past, and whether or not it will be enough to take him to the top once again.

Phil "the Gift" Heath is definitely the man to beat. Cutler called him "the new King" when he took last year's title and many look to Heath to follow in Cutler's footsteps and win numerous Mr. Olympia titles. Whether or not he can be dethroned is yet to be seen.

In the contest's 47-year history, only 13 men have held the coveted title of Mr. Olympia. If this yearÕ' competition produces number 14, there's a good chance it may be Kai Green, who placed 4th in the 2009 Mr. Olympia contest and 3rd in the 2011 competition. Many fans believe he has a better shot than Cutler to take the title.

The 2012 Olympia contest will, in some ways, show if bodybuilding has entered the age of Phil Heath. While many fans are betting on him to win, they'll have to wait and see if last year's champion will begin to build his own winning streak.
